You saw a shirt for $97

You didn't have the cash, so you borrowed $50 from your mum and $50 from your dad

$50 + $50 = $100

You bought the shirt, and had $3 change

You gave your dad $1 and your mum $1 and kept the other $1 for yourself.
Now you owe your mum $49 and your dad $49.
$49+$49 = $98 + your $1 = $99

Where's the missing $1?

You've added the dollar to the equasion instead of subtracting it from the overall debt.

You have taken 2 separate transactions (equations) and mixed them up.

You borrowed 100 dollars and paid back 2 you still owe 98 dollars.
You gave 100 dollars to the shop girl and got back a 97 dollar shirt and 3 dollars change.
The two transactions have no relationship to each other except that they both involve (at some stage) the 100 dollars.

I think it goes something like this-:

If you borrowed $100 spent $97 on the shirt, you get $3 in change, you keep $1 so you have the shirt=$97 +$1 from the change you kept makes $98 you give $1 back to each of your parents ( making $2), now owing them $49 each ($98 + $2 =100 )

or something like that, does that make sense???

That's it Rick

The original story mixes up asserts and debts. In the end you owe $98 and you have $98 in goods and cash.
