If Saramango's knife has "original Bowie knife" etched on the blade it is most likely a Solingen Germany knife , during the 70's and 80's the german knife makers in the town had a habit of writing cheesy etchings in the blade .

I have a WIDDER knife from Solingen that has the same etching .

If they have WEST GERMANY stamped on the sheath in between the belt slits it was made before 89 , before german re-unification .
Knives after 89 should just have GERMANY written , it looks old enough to be pre 89 .

Can't see any other markings on it, dad says he bought it in 1974-75. It's good quality steel, holds an edge longer than I've ever known another knife to - takes forever to sharpen if you let it dull, too - but I really don't know anything more about it. I like it more for sentimental value than anything else.

Be interesting to see if it makes it through as it is a single hand opener.

Of course it will, I had a box of spring assisted one handers, opened and checked over by customs (they leave a note saying that they opened your package).

Here is a Buck 183 Crosslock folder that I bought a month ago and used to cut up a Sambar spiker that I shot with my 30.06
on Australia day. It worked brilliantly especially the hook for skinning, opened it up like a zip to get the back straps out.
